our wines
The Collelungo farm produces Chianti Classico in the heart of this renowned Italian wine area. It rises at an average altitude of 540 meters above sea level. The extension of the company is 94 hectares, 19 of which are specialized vineyards planted with Sangiovese, plus a very small part with Merlot. The soil structure arises from the disintegration of alberese and galestro rocks and is very rich in stony skeleton, with poor water retention capacity.
The very low yields per hectare concentrate the aromas in a surprising way, and this is how the Sangiovese planted here can express all the “terroir” of Collelungo: great aromas and infinite elegance combined with an excellent structure.
Given the particular nature of the soil which makes mechanization almost impossible, in the vineyard all the cultivation operations (pruning, tying, leaf removal, thinning of the bunches) are carried out manually; even the harvest is done completely by hand, in this way only the best grapes can boast the Collelungo brand.
The optimal exposure of the vineyards, all facing south, the exceptional soil and microclimatic conditions and the density of vines per hectare, up to the current 5500 plants per hectare, with Tuscan upside-down training systems for the oldest vineyard, the last one left and spurred cordon for those recently planted, allow to obtain complexity, elegance and finesse in the wines.
The area has cooler temperatures than normal, both for the altitude and for the unique microclimate, giving the grapes an unmistakable aromatic tone. In the cellar, the use in vinification of steel tanks with a squat section allows to obtain a high extraction of color, with extremely sweet and fine tannins, while maintaining all the aromatic components. After racking, the wines complete the malolactic fermentation before being allowed to mature in small French wooden barrels. At the end the wines are bottled and will rest for a few months before being put on the market.
